eputy gubernatorial candidate Sandiaga Uno has said he will not prolong the debate on tax amnesty with incumbent Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama. Ahok has accused Sandiaga of tax evasion.

“In relation to the tax amnesty issue, Pak Sandi has decided not to prolong the debate,” said Syarif, secretary with the Anies Baswedan-Sandiaga Uno campaign team, in Jakarta on Wednesday as reported by tribunnews.com.

Previously, Ahok said taking part in the tax amnesty program indicated that Sandiaga had evaded paying taxes.

“Tax amnesty is for people who cannot prove that they have paid their taxes. In this case, Pak Sandiaga applied for [the tax amnesty program]. This proves that Pak Sandiaga has previously evaded paying taxes,” Ahok said.

Syarif said the campaign team would start to introduce the pair, nominated by the Gerinda Party and the Prosperous Justice Party, to the public in order to try and expand their popularity.

“The campaign team still has a lot of work to do. We just can’t respond to these issues,” said Syarif, adding that the tem had prepared a strategy to approach the local people.

According to a recent survey conducted by the Indonesian Survey Circle (LSI), incumbent pair Ahok-Djarot Saiful Hidayat’s popularity rating stands at 31.4 percent, followed by Anies-Sandiaga at 21.1 percent and Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono-Sylviana Murni at 19.3 percent. (bbn)
