Batam, Rempang and Galang Police have released two Chinese nationals suspected of stealing on a Garuda flight from Jakarta to Batam.

The police investigation into the case found no evidence of theft and no one had come forward reporting any loss of belongings.

Crime unit chief Comr. Memo Ardian said Monday they had found no evidence. “The people who caught these two [for alleged theft] were the flight attendants. But […] we have not found any evidence and we haven’t received any complaints,” he said.

Memo said the two Chinese men said they only wanted to put their jackets in the overhead compartment. “Because we could not find enough evidence, we are coordinating with immigration,” Memo said.

Memo said Saturday the two men had been sent to the immigration office in Batam, which previously had withheld their passports.

On Oct. 12, a Garuda flight attendant suspected the two men were unloading baggage from the overhead compartment that was not theirs. Reportedly, the bag belonged to another passenger, identified as Hendra. The flight attendant notified the pilot when the plane landed in Hang Nadim Airport in Batam, where then the police were called. (evi)
