Garuda flight attendant stopped an alleged stealing attempt by two Chinese passengers who were spotted trying to take valuables from bags belonging to other passengers from the overhead compartment on board a flight from Jakarta to Batam on Wednesday.
“The attendant witnessed the two Chinese passengers open the overhead compartment and search for valuables inside other passengers' luggage,” Hang Nadim airport general manager Suwarso said on Thursday.
According to Suwarso, the flight attendant reported the case to the pilot, who contacted the airport police to arrest the culprits upon landing. The suspects were identified as Chinese nationals, Zhang Zhengkun, 37, and Zhoo Xiang, 35.
"Preliminary questioning on the suspects found that they had arrived in Jakarta via the Philippines or Singapore and are using the free visa policy to visit Indonesia,” Suwarso said.
He added the two Chinese passengers had reserved a return flight from Batam to Jakarta on the same day.
Barelang Police detective chief Comr. Memo Ardian said the police investigators were quizzing the suspects to find out whether the suspects were part of a larger crime network. (dmr)
