T

he United Development Party (PPP) faction led by Djan Faridz has declared its support for Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama and Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election.

Another PPP camp led by Romahurmuziy, the party leader recognized by the government, previously declared its support for a rival candidate team, namely Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono and his running mate Sylviana Murni.

"We are fully committed to supporting Ahok in the election. The PPP Jakarta branch and all branch representatives are ready to support Ahok," Djan said at the PPP headquarters in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Monday.

Djan praised Ahok as a governor who had contributed much to Muslims in the city without boasting about it. He said Ahok had prepared an Islamic center, constructed mosques at City Hall and sent mosque attendants and Quran teachers to Mecca for the haj.

“What has he not done to respect Muslims? It has been a great thing for us as Muslims to cooperate with him for sake of the Jakartans," he said.

In April, Romahurmuziy was appointed as chairman of the party during the party congress in East Jakarta. The minister of law and human rights has legalized his party leadership.

Djan's camp has not accepted Romahurmuziy as leader and points to a Supreme Court decision as the basis for Djan’s leadership. (bbn)
