akarta gubernatorial hopeful Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono said producers of Betawi batik needed to be more creative in designing motifs so that they could attract a wider range of customers.
While visiting Terogong village in Cilandak, South Jakarta, which is known for its Terogong Betawi batik, on Wednesday, Agus promised to promote the product at the national level and internationally if he is elected Jakarta governor in the Feb. 15, 2017 poll.
"I'm grateful to have the opportunity to meet Betawi batik craftswomen. I hope we can promote this batik to make it a nationwide and even worldwide commodity," he said.
Agus, who also tried to draw batik with a canting (copper vessel with a spout-like nib) with dozens of craftswomen watching during the visit, said that with more interesting motifs, Betawi batik could become a choice of young people.
Besides meeting the batik-makers, Agus also held talks with the villagers. During the talks, Agus promised to bring improvements to the city, including in security, education and prosperity.
During the visit, Agus also inaugurated a post of a support team in the village by signing a banner bearing his picture and that of his running mate, Sylviana Murni. (bbn)
