he Japanese consul general in Medan, North Sumatra, said Tuesday evening that his office had been mandated to give Rp 4 billion a year to help the people of North Sumatra.

Consul General Hirofumi Morikawa said during dinner with the press in Medan that the funds would be for used to develop public facilities such as school buildings, clean water facilities and drug rehabilitation centers.

“This week we will visit Sicanang in Belawan to help people there develop a trash bank,” said Morikawa, who has been the consul general in Medan for one and a half years.

Morikawa said the liked his job in Medan because the people were friendly and relations between people were harmonious. He also thought that Medan and other cities in North Sumatra had lots of development potential.

“We will invite Japanese investors to come here to see investment opportunities,” he said. (evi)
