he Home Ministry is set to announce on Wednesday the acting Jakarta governor as Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama and Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat will take a lengthy campaign leave to seek reelection in the Jakarta election, to be held on Feb. 15, 2017.
“On Wednesday, we will carry out the transfer of office to the acting governor at the Home Ministry,” said Ahok as reported by tribunnews.com. Ahok, however, said that he had not been informed of who will temporarily take over his duties. The campaign period will take place from Oct. 28 to Feb. 11.
Ahok has voiced his reluctance to take leave, as he wants to focus on drafting the Jakarta city budget, which is expected to be approved by the City Council in late December.
He submitted a judicial review to the Constitutional Court to seek revision a of the Regional Elections Law, which requires gubernatorial candidates to take leave during the campaign period. The court is hearing the case.
Although no official statement has been made regarding Ahok’s replacement, two names that have circulated in the media are Home Ministry secretary-general Yuswandi A.Temenggung and Director General of Autonomy Soni Sumarsono. (bbn)
