T

he Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) has warned Jakarta gubernatorial candidates to engage in fair competition and refrain from illicit conduct such as bribing election organizers, or else face disqualification from the upcoming election.

“There must be no money politics; we will give strict sanctions. We will guard the gubernatorial elections in Jakarta and other regions,” Bawaslu commissioner Nasrullah said in his opening speech at the declaration of a peaceful campaign for the Jakarta gubernatorial election, held at the National Monument on Saturday.

Bawaslu will also immediately dismiss officials who are proven to have accepted bribes.

“Let’s run the election campaign in an honorable way,” Nasrullah said.

The Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPUD) held a peaceful campaign rally on Saturday to kick off the campaign period, which runs from Oct. 28 to Feb 11. The three pairs of candidates — incumbent Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama and Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat; Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno; and Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono and Sylviana Murni — attended the event.

Voting day for the simultaneous regional elections for 101 areas across the country is scheduled for Feb. 15, 2017. (win/rin)
