ozens of students from the Darul Quran Islamic boarding school in Tangerang collected plastic bottles, newspapers and other garbage scattered around the yard of Istiqlal Mosque after the Friday prayer.

The students of Darul Quran, which is run by famous cleric Yusuf Mansur, held large plastic bags and spread themselves throughout the mosque compound to collect garbage left by the tens of thousands of people who prayed at the mosque before taking part in the massive demonstration.

"We will stay here during the rally and clean the mosque. Our main objective is to clean the place. After we finish cleaning up the place, we will join the rally," said Hamdan Hamsyah, one of the students.

Hamdan said he and his friends had been in the area since 10 a.m.

It was not only the boarding school students dealing with the leftover detritus. Izudin and Hadian, two students from the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) in Bogor, West Java, also picked up trash at the National Monument (Monas) park in Central Jakarta.

With a big plastic bag in his hands, Izudin said he only wanted to lighten the burden of the city’s cleaning service workers, who had to work overtime to collect garbage left by the participants of the massive rally.

"We just want to reduce their burden after the demonstration," Izudin said. (bbn)
