Jakarta Police chief pledges all-out protection

In the wake of a violent rally on Friday evening, Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Mochamad Iriawan showed that he means business with his duty to secure the capital.

n the wake of a violent rally on Friday evening, Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Mochamad Iriawan told the public that he means business with his duty to secure the capital.

Iriawan said he was even ready to personally patrol Jakarta streets to uphold security in Jakarta.

“I will inspect areas of Jakarta using a motorcycle,” Iriawan told the press at the State Palace on Friday evening.

“I will also inspect the House of Representatives building, since hundreds of protesters are there at this moment."

Iriawan stated that he had deployed over 1,000 police personnel to ensure security at the House complex. Police also beefed up security in several other areas of Jakarta.

He added that a joint police-military security force had been deployed to safeguard residential areas and economic centers.

Tens of thousands of protesters flocked to the Jakarta streets on Friday to demand the immediate arrest of Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama over an alleged blasphemous remark. (asm/dmr/hwa)
