ational Police chief. Gen. Tito Karnavian says police investigators will hold a case expose soon in relation to a blasphemy case implicating Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, as instructed by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.
Speaking after meeting with the President at the State Palace on Saturday, Tito said the case expose may be televised.
“The President said the case expose should be televised. It is an order from the President for the sake of transparency,” Tito said during a press conference, accompanied by State Secretary Pratikno.
The President’s order comes following a large-scale demonstration in Jakarta on Friday, in which more than 100,000 people took to the streets, demanding the immediate arrest of Ahok on allegations of blasphemy.
As a follow up to the President’s order, Tito said police investigators would hold a case expose in front of journalists, despite case exposes usually being held behind closed doors.
For the expose, the police will invite relevant parties, such as lawmakers, the National Police Commission (Kompolnas), those that had filed reports against Ahok, witnesses, including those presented by the Indonesia Ulema Council and experts.
“We also invite Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, or he could be represented by his lawyers,” said Tito, adding that if Ahok is found not to have made blasphemous remarks, the case would be closed. (bbn)
