akarta governor candidate Anies Baswedan denied on Monday that he is a close friend of Buni Yani, the uploader of a video of incumbent Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama that triggered an outcry from some Muslims and led to massive demonstrations.

“I know, am familiar [with Buni], but not close. I know his face, but I don’t know his name,” said Anies, who was once education and culture minister under President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, as quoted by kompas.com.

Anies made the statement to respond to a picture that had gone viral and showed him and Buni, a lecturer at a private university in Jakarta, and several other people together at an event.

Separately, Buni admitted to have cut and uploaded the video to his Facebook account, but he denied that he had edited it beforehand.

In his Facebook account, Buni wrote the heading: “Religious blasphemy?” The video went viral and has been blamed for triggering numerous protests, including a massive demonstration on Friday that ended violently when two police cars were set on fire.

“I used a question mark because I’m not sure whether it’s blasphemy or not,” he said in a press conference on Monday that was held to respond to a statement by National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar who said Buni could be named a suspect for allegedly spreading hatred.(jun)
