he Jakarta administration has announced that 14,677 civil servants failed to turn up for work during the mass rally against Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama last Friday.
“Yesterday I received a report from the city manpower body (BKD) that 14,677 people were not recorded by the presence devices on Friday,” acting Jakarta governor Sumarsono said at City Hall on Monday, as reported by kompas.com.
Before the demonstration, Sumarsono had warned civil servants not to take part in the demonstration or risk losing their jobs.
Sumarsono said the recordings from the electronic presence devices would be crosschecked with the real conditions in the respective agencies.
He promised to send out warning letters to those who were intentionally absent for taking part in the demonstration.
“But if they have a reasonable argument or they just forgot to deliver their absence letter while they were sick, we can tolerate it,” he added.
Sumarsono said he would not impose heavy punishment on employees who were absent on Friday, because heavy punishment was reserved for those who repeatedly violated regulations or were absent from work for more than 25 days. (bbn)
