he National Police are scheduled to question Buni Yani, the man who allegedly uploaded part of Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama’s speech, in which he cited a verse from the Quran.
National Police spokesperson Brig. Gen. Agus Rianto said their investigation into Buni was in response to 11 reports made about Ahok’s alleged blasphemous remarks. All of the reports mentioned Buni’s video as evidence.
He further explained that the Jakarta Police had previously investigated the video over hate speech complaints.
“The National Police headquarters will take over the case to avoid a complicated process so that we can thoroughly proceed with the [legal] process," Agus said in Jakarta on Monday.
“We will let the Jakarta Police complete its investigation first. We will conduct the process transparently to show the public that the police are independent and impartial," he went on. Buni’s questioning is expected to take place on Monday, coinciding with Ahok's questioning schedule.
Buni, a communications lecturer at the London School of Public Relations in Jakarta, has claimed he only deleted some of the footage before he uploaded it on his Facebook page. However, he admitted that he made some errors in transcribing Ahok's speech, which later went viral and sparked public outrage. The National Police have said he could be named a suspect as a result of such errors. (ebf)
