akarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Awi Setiyono said on Tuesday that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo would personally need to report musician Ahmad Dhani to the police for alleged defamation in a speech during a mass rally on Friday.

"This case can be categorized as a crime with a complaint in which the victim should report the case by himself. According to the law, it is the victim who will be investigated in this case, not other people," Awi said on Tuesday at the Jakarta Police office.

Previously, Jokowi supporter groups Projo (Pro Jokowi) and Laskar Rakyat Jokowi (The People’s Troops for Jokowi) reported Dhani to the Jakarta Police for alleged defamation.

Awi explained that for the type of complaint, a case could be resolved if a victim decided to forgive the reported person. Therefore, the police need to wait for the victim to report the case by himself, Awi added.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Jokowi ordered police to investigate the alleged insults.

"I have been talking about hate speech and to insult a symbol of the state, this should be followed up [by the police]," Jokowi said as reported by tribunnews.com

The Constitutional Court has annulled articles on defamation against the President in the Criminal Code, saying that the President and other citizens were equal before the law. (jun)
