View all search resultstate-owned Bank Rakyat Indonesia has paid Rp 1.9 billion (US$144,000) to 463 victims of ATM card skimming in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara.
“As of Nov. 4, we have disbursed Rp 1.9 billion to pay to replace the money of 463 skimming victims,” Dedi Sunardi, BRI Bali and Nusa Tenggara office head, said Wednesday.
Dedi said 515 BRI account holders reported they had been victims of skimming. Total losses from the crime were estimated to reach Rp 2.7 billion.
“Therefore, we have replaced the money of 90 percent of the victims. We will settle it all this week,” he said.
The head of the service division at BRI headquarters, Joice Farida, said the bank had checked 190 ATMs in Mataram and its surroundings and found six ATMs had been tampered with. She said all the machines had been fixed. “We also removed the hoods from the machine [keypad] to prevent the perpetrators from planting skimming tools on them,” she said.
Skimming is done by installing equipment that reads card information and PIN numbers.
BRI spokesperson Fajar Pramono said the case had been reported to the police.
