P

olice will invite 20 experts, including religious, criminal law and language experts, to the National Police headquarters on Tuesday to participate in a case screening concerning the blasphemy charges against Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama.

"We have invited 20 experts to attend the screening tomorrow," National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Agus Riyanto said on Monday without revealing the names of the experts.

A case screening is the phase of a criminal investigation in which investigators decide whether the evidence collected is solid enough for the police to name someone a suspect.

Agus said Ahok's team would also bring their defense witnesses to the screening.

All of the information would be used by police to decide whether they have enough evidence to charge Ahok with a crime involving a statement he made on Sept. 27 about how some people had been misusing a Quranic verse to convince voters not to support him in the upcoming Jakarta election.

Police said they expected make a decision on the screening on Wednesday or Thursday, Agus said.

Besides the experts, he said police have also invited the force's Internal Affairs Division and other external parties, including the Indonesian Ombudsman, the National Police Commission and House of Representatives Commission III on legal affairs and laws, human rights and security to monitor the screening.

“The external parties would act as supervisors of the screening,” he added.

Agus said that police have invited all parties that have reported Ahok to the police for the alleged blasphemy to attend the screening, as well as the incumbent governor.

Ahok could be represented by his legal team during the screening, he said.(jun)
