he Attorney General's Office (AGO) is still examining the dossier of the case of alleged blasphemy against Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama and hopes to finish the examination process soon.

“Prosecutors are still examining the dossier now. We hope to finish the examination soon,” Ali Mukartono, the leader of the prosecutor's team handling Ahok's case, said at the AGO headquarters in South Jakarta on Tuesday.

However, Ali said the team, consisting of 13 prosecutors, had not set a deadline on when the process would finish as according to the law they are allowed to return the dossier within 14 days after the document's submission.

On Monday, National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian expressed his optimism that prosecutors would complete the examination of the dossier soon.

"Insya Allah (God willing), today [Monday] or tomorrow, the AGO will declare the dossier P-21 [complete]. We hope that this week we can submit the supporting evidence and hand over the suspect to the AGO,” Tito said.

On Friday, the AGO’s junior prosecutor for general crimes Noor Rahmad said he expected to complete the P-21 case dossier in less than the allotted 14 days.

Police previously named Ahok a suspect in case of alleged blasphemy after his statement about a verse in the Quran at an event in Thousand Islands regency in September.

Angered by the statement, hundreds of thousands of people, led by conservative Muslim groups, staged a rally in front of the Presidential Palace on Nov. 4, demanding that the government prosecute Ahok, a Christian of Chinese descent, for his remarks.
