head of a large rally planned for Friday, police say they are vigilant about potential attempts by protesters to overthrow the government, even though the rally's organizers have promised a peaceful event.
"We expect there won't be any attack against the government. However, we will keep watching mass activities and potential disruptions," National Police Spokesman Ir. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar said at the National Police headquarters in South Jakarta on Tuesday.
Last week, Tito Karnavian said the Dec. 2 protest over alleged blasphemy by Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama could kindle an attack on President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo’s administration.
On Monday, the National Movement to Safeguard the Indonesian Ulema Council’s Fatwa (GNPF-MUI) promised to protest peacefully by carrying out Friday prayers at the National Monument (Monas), Central Jakarta, to urge the arrest of Ahok. Tito has granted a permit for such activity.
"We hope that no noxious intentions will come up during the prayer, because it is a holy event," Boy said. (dan)
