Papuan women are happy to hear the new market, called Pasar Mama-Mama, will be open before Christmas in Jayapura.
“I am very happy because our fight for the last 13 years has been successful,” said Yosina Bosawer, 59, one of Papuan women who sells vegetables, fruits, fish and other produce on Jl. Percetakan in Jayapura. “We finally have our own special market for Papua’s Mama Mama. This is the best Christmas present for us Mama-Mama,” she said.
Currently, almost 120 women sell produce from a makeshift market in the yard of a former government office. The new market will have five floors, standing on a 2,400 square-meter plot of land formerly belonging to land transportation company PT Damri.
The market will be officially called Pasar Budaya (Culture Market) but is locally known as Mama-Mama Market.
“In line with our commitment, the market will be completed before Christmas. Construction has reached 99 percent,” technical manager from contractor company PT PP, Muchlis Abri Putra, said Wednesday.
The groundbreaking of the market was officiated by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in April this year. Pasar Mama Mama is part of Jokowi’s promises for better development in Papua. (evi)
