ouse of Representatives Commission I overseeing defense, informatics and foreign affairs kicked off a two-day selection process for 23 ambassador posts on Tuesday.

Commission I chairman Abdul Kharis Almasyhari said as many as 10 individuals were scheduled for screenings with members of Commission I on Tuesday, and another 13 on Wednesday.

“We expect to submit the screening results to the President as soon as we complete the selection process later on Wednesday,” he said.

“We will give recommendations to President [Joko] Jokowi [Widodo]. The final decision will be in the hands of the President,” the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) politician added.

The candidates to face questions from Commission I include, the country’s largest airline Lion Air co-founder Rusdi Kirana, former minister Yuddy Krisnandi, researcher Ikrar Nusa Bhakti and Golkar Party lawmaker Tantowi Yahya.

Although the final decision is Jokowi’s, several lawmakers argued that the House had a role to determine the fate of the candidates.

“We can ask the President to submit other names to replace any candidate we think is unfit for the position,” Commission I lawmaker Zainuddin Amali of Golkar said. (dmr)
