View all search resultsresident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo summoned National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian to the State Palace on Monday evening to clarify police circulars that have been issued based on the fatwa (religious edict) of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) on the wearing of Christmas attributes.
“The President called the National Police chief in relation to that matter [the circulars],” Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung said as reported by kompas.com.
Earlier, Kulonprogo Police in Yogyakarta and Bekasi Police in West Java issued circulars citing the fatwa and calling on owners and managements of businesses not to force their employees to wear Christmas attributes.
Pramono said the President wanted the police to uphold state law, not MUI fatwas.

Pramono regretted the issuance of the circulars on the Christmas attributes ban by the Kulonprogo and Bekasi police forces, saying they went too far.
He said the President also summoned a number of police generals to the palace in relation to the ban on the enforced wearing of Christmas attributes.
"Our existing laws [which can be used] are laws, PPs [government regulations], presidential decrees, ministerial decrees, including the National Police chief’s decrees. So they can be used,” Pramono added. (jun)
