newly established selection team is inviting dedicated citizens with a high standard of ethics from across the country to join the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) as commissioners.
Selection team head Jimly Asshidiqie said his team welcomed all Indonesians, regardless of their background, to apply for the position that was open until February next year. The team would also tour the country to search for potential candidates from areas outside Jakarta.
Speaking to The Jakarta Post, Jimly cited the criteria required by applicants, including integrity and a capability to carry out the commission’s complicated job in protecting and upholding human rights in the country. Next year’s selection assessment would emphasize on teamwork, one of the leadership qualities current commissioners were still lacking, Jimly said.
“The current commissioners are preoccupied by internal conflicts they’ve created. They change leadership every year because everyone wants to be a chairperson. This has consequently made them unable to perform effectively,” he said.
“Therefore, we are looking for individuals who are willing to dedicate themselves to the [Komnas HAM’s] work, not positions. [We] will not take individuals who want to repeat the same practice [of annual leader changes]. Candidates selected must contribute to strengthening the leadership of Komnas HAM,” Jimly added.
Komnas HAM currently had 13 commissioners, who were inaugurated in 2013. Infighting over leadership and facilities has drawn nationwide attention onto the commission. Komnas HAM was again under the public spotlight earlier this year because of budget irregularities allegedly involving one of its commissioners, Dianto Bachriadi. (ebf)
