akarta gubernatorial candidate Anies Baswedan has promised to provide large refrigerators for the city’s fresh food markets to help traders avoid suffering losses from unsold goods.
“[I will] provide big refrigerators for the markets. The traders’ goods can be kept there,” Anies said during a visit to a market in Kalideres, West Jakarta, on Monday as reported by kompas.com.
The former education and culture minister said the traders, especially staple food vendors, so far could only purchase items in a small quantity as they were afraid goods would be spoiled before they could be sold.
Anies, who is paired with businessman Sandiaga Uno in the gubernatorial election slated for Feb. 15 next year, said the refrigerators would be prioritized for meat vendors.
Anies also said he planned to shorten the food distribution chain, which is believed to have caused the high price of staple foods. As an example he cited the long process of buying onions from producers in Brebes, Central Java, and bringing them to buyers in Jakarta.
“If I’m elected as governor, I will buy directly from Brebes,” said Anies, who was nominated by the Gerindra Party and the Prosperous Justice Party.
In recent surveys, the Anies-Sandiaga pair has regularly ranked third, after Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono-Sylviana Murni and Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama-Djarot Saiful Hidayat. (jun)
