s terrorism is still regarded as one of the nation’s most pressing security issues, the National Police will continue Operation Tinombala to pursue the remaining members of the East Indonesia Mujahidin (MIT), also known as the Santoso terrorist cell, in Poso, Central Sulawesi, next year.
National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar said on Wednesday that the counterterrorism operation in Poso would be carried out simultaneously with a clamping down on terrorist networks across the country.
“We will hunt down the remaining members of the Santoso group,” Boy said at the National Police headquarters.
Santoso, aka Abu Wardah, was one of the most infamous terrorists in the country. He was shot dead in July this year after being wanted for five years. His group declared allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) movement in 2014.
Boy said the police would also monitor the movement of members of terrorist cells connected with Bahrun Naim, who is suspected to be fighting with IS in Syria. Bahrun’s group Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), which also supports the IS movement, is perceived as one of the most dangerous active terrorist groups.
“We will beef up cooperation with Malaysia and Turkey because many of them [Indonesian militants] are flying to and returning [from Syria] via these countries,” Boy said. (evi)
