P

resident Prabowo Subianto has promised bigger cash prizes for athletes who win gold medals at the 2025 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand, as the government sets a target for Indonesia to finish among the top three.

The country is fielding 1,021 athletes in 48 out of 50 sports at the SEA Games from Tuesday to Dec. 20. These athletes have completed a two-and-a-half-month national training camp.

Speaking at a send-off ceremony at the Merdeka Palace on Friday for the Indonesian contingent set to compete in Thailand, Prabowo urged the athletes to “do their best”.

“Do your very best, give your very best. Give everything you can, because this is an occasion to bring honor to the entire nation. You are the representatives of nearly 300 million Indonesians,” Prabowo said.

The President revealed that he had instructed Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir to double the government’s cash prize for gold medalists from Rp 500 million (US$30,000) to Rp 1 billion.

“I am sure you are competing not merely for money. But from the look on your faces, it’s clear that receiving such an award would greatly help your careers,” Prabowo said.
