akarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has criticized acting governor Sumarsono for promoting officials who had demoted for various alleged violations.

Instead of promoting demoted civil servants, Ahok said Sumarsono could have appointed qualified civil servants whose positions had been abolished because of recent restructuring in the Jakarta administration.

“Why should he appoint civil servants with a lot of problems who had been demoted to become regular staffers? We have a lot of qualified employees with no current positions,” Ahok said at his campaign headquarters on Jl. Lembang, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Thursday.

The governor further said he could not interfere with Sumarsono’s decision because he was on forced campaign leave.

Ahok said he had asked City Council head Prasetyo Edi, who is also his campaign team chief, to act in accordance with his capacity to keep civil servants with good performances in their positions.

He admitted that he had heard a rumor that Sumarsono planned to demote Jakarta Sanitation Agency head Isnawa Aji, using restructuring as the reason for the demotion. It was also reported that several other officials will be demoted under the pretext that their positions were not in line with their education backgrounds.

“Please don’t think that these good civil servants work for me [personally]. They work for Jakarta,” he said, praising Isnawa's performance.

On Tuesday, Sumarsono inaugurated 5,038 civil servants to implement Bylaw No. 5/2016 on the forming and composition of working units (SKPD). The acting governor admitted he had promoted several staff members who had been demoted by Ahok.  (ebf)
