he National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has vowed to closely watch the process of agrarian reform, a signature move by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, who has demanded an acceleration of its progress this year.
Komnas HAM commissioner Sandra Moniaga said her commission had recently created a team specifically tasked with closely observing the progress of agrarian reform.
“We have to ensure that the beneficiaries of the plan are farmers, not landlords or corporations. Another aspect we should be highlighting is that women should receive equal rights from this plan,” she said at her office on Tuesday, during the commission’s year-end report and 2017 projection.
Commissioner Maneger Nasution, who leads the mediation desk, said that agrarian conflict had been rampant in the last five years and would potentially become an uphill task for the commission to address this year.
“Due to the structural gaps between the people and government or corporations, Komnas HAM has become the last resort for them to receive support in solving land disputes,” he said, adding that last year his desk had mediated 79 cases related to land disputes, more than other any other subject.
The agrarian reform agenda was included in Jokowi’s multifaceted Nawacita development program to improve the lives of farmers. It consists of seven initiatives, including agrarian conflict settlement, land distribution to farmers and nationwide land legalization.
