ix people are missing after the Fita Jaya boat loaded with 30 tons of fish capsized in Belitung waters, Bangka Belitung Islands province, on Tuesday afternoon.

"The location of the ill-fated boat is around 18 miles off Lengkuas islet. We have launched search efforts but have yet to see results," Pangkalpinang search and rescue team head Kornelis said as quoted by kompas.com on Wednesday.

The boat was apparently struck by strong waves as it headed to Pontianak, West Kalimantan.

"One of the boat crewmembers contacted his family, informing them of a leak on the boat. Afterwards, the family could not place a return call," said Kornelis.

The boat had been fishing in Belitung waters for a week. (dmr)
