n the wake of bribery allegations involving justice Patrialis Akbar, a number of Constitutional Court veterans met with the eight remaining sitting court justices on Wednesday morning in the hope of beginning reform of the institution.

"There are some issues we would like to discuss [with the former Constitutional Court justices] to seek input aimed at regaining [public] trust," chief justice Arief Hidayat said when opening the meeting.

On Wednesday morning, a number of the court's veterans, like Jimly Asshiddiqie, Maruarar Siahaan and Laica Marzuki who served in the first cohort of the bench between 2003 and 2008, attended the meeting to give their opinions on the matter.

Those from the second cohort, like Ahmad Sodiki, were also present, along with Abdul Mukthie Fadjar, a former justice who served during Jimly's chairmanship and now leads the court's ethics council.

The meeting was expected to produce some kind of joint decision to save the court.

At the Constitutional Court, an ad hoc ethics council is also set to hold its first hearing about Patrialis' alleged ethical breach later today.

Partialis, who was accused last week by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) of accepting bribes allegedly paid to sway him over an upcoming ruling about a cattle and husbandry law, was the second Constitutional Court justice to have been arrested for bribery in the past three years. Akil Mochtar was the first. (wit)
