A

member of the Army's special forces (Kopassus), identified as Second Sgt. Danang, has been reported missing after falling into the sea near Semarang, Central Java, on Tuesday morning, during a parachuting exercise.

Diponegoro Regional Military (Kodam IV) Commander Maj. Gen. Jaswandi said two Kopassus members had gone into the sea after the weather turned bad during the exercise, one had been rescued but after a day of searching, Danang had yet to be found.

“Eleven members of the special forces took part in the exercise. At first the wind conditions were considered safe for parachuting,” he said.

The exercise began at 7:15 a.m., when the soldiers were taken by helicopter for the jump. Nine managed to land on the designated spot.

Central Java Search and Rescue Agency official Trijoko said the team had found Danang’s parachute and helmet.

“The bad weather and the high seas have hampered our efforts,” he said.

The rescue team will continue to look for Danang on Wednesday. (wit)
