T

he Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) has called on campaign teams competing in Wednesday’s regional elections to remove all campaign signs from public property.

"It would be good of the candidates and their teams to remove all campaign material such as billboards from public property. They could even garner support from the public by doing so, right?" Bawaslu commissioner Nasrullah said on Monday.

The General Elections Commission (KPU) prohibits the display of campaign material in public spaces during the cooling-off period from Feb. 12 to Feb. 14.

However, the KPU and Bawaslu have found it difficult to completely clear away campaign posters.

In Jakarta alone, a number of billboards and stickers advertizing candidates are still displayed on public property, including trees.

"All campaign signs should have been taken down on Sunday. This is not only our [Bawaslu] responsibility, but also the responsibility of candidates and the city administration. We’re not the ones who should be climbing trees to remove campaign signs," Nasrullah said.(trw)
