akarta governor hopeful Anies Baswedan has said he would not yet celebrate even though exit polls indicated that he would likely compete head-to-head against incumbent Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama in a runoff.

The former education minister said he and his running mate, Sandiaga Uno, would wait for the Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPU) to announce the preliminary results of the election before planning their next move.

The Anies-Sandi campaign team reportedly sent volunteers to each polling station across Jakarta to make sure the count was conducted fairly and transparently.

“We will monitor the vote counting. There is still long way to go [before the official results are announced]. Only after that we can start to plan our next move,” Anies told reporters at Gerindra Party headquarters in Ragunan, South Jakarta.

Sandiaga echoed the statement, highlighting that their volunteers and supporters should not yet celebrate but keep praying until the KPU made its final announcement.

Various polls suggest Anies and Ahok will compete for the Jakarta administration’s top seat in the second round of the election because neither secured more than 50 percent of the vote to win. (ebf)
