mid tighter competition in the domestic market, state-owned cement maker PT Semen Padang, a subsidiary of Indonesia’s largest cement producer PT Semen Indonesia, is making inroads into a new export market in Australia.
Semen Padang on Tuesday delivered 22 tons of cement for its first shipment on the Meratus Minahasa V.1705S to Sydney.
Commercial director Pudjo Suseno said that the shipment was made in response to demand from potential Australian buyers revealed at the end of last year.
To follow up that offer, the company sent product samples to Australia and created custom packages to suit their needs.
“The realized export to Australia, known as a difficult market to penetrate because of its strict [import] requirements, proves that the quality of Semen Padang’s products is something that the company can be proud of,” Antara news agency quoted him as saying after he launched the first shipment to Australia from Teluk Bayur Port in Padang, West Sumatra.

Opening up new overseas markets is one of the strategies of Indonesia’s oldest cement producer to cope with more intense rivalry in the local market caused by oversupply.
It previously sold its products to a few Asian countries, such as Bangladesh, the Philippines and Sri Lanka.
Semen Padang exported 396,000 tons of cement and 90,000 tons of clinker last year and targets to deliver 571,000 tons of cement to overseas destinations.
It aims to produce 7.4 million tons of cement this year and sell 8.3 million tons of cement. (win/lnd)
