T

he progress of the construction of additional elevated roads in Semanggi, South Jakarta, has reached 40 percent and is expected to be completed in the middle of 2017.

During a site visit on Thursday, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said he expected the overpass to be finished in July. If delayed, the latest possible deadline for the project is Aug. 17, the nation’s independence day.

"I set the target in July, if it goes a bit slower than expected, it will be on August 17," he said.

The overpass construction began in Apr. 8 last year by state-owned construction company PT Wijaya Karya (Persero). (Wika) and Japanese Mori Group under its local subsidiary PT Mitra Panca Persada. Construction costs reached Rp 360 billion (US$26.96 million), financed by the DKI Jakarta regional budget.

"The Rp 360 billion price tag is relatively cheap, I give the thumbs up for Wika," Jokowi said.

The circular overpass is expected to reduce traffic congestion at the Semanggi junction by 40 percent. "It is not a total solution only 30 to 40 percent, but at least we can reduce the congestion," he said. (bbn)
