ore than 3,000 people have sent their applications to an independent committee tasked with selecting new advisers for the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
“We’re heartened by the people’s enthusiasm. We received more than 3,000 applications, but only 250 people were qualified to go on to the next selection stage,” committee member Mahfud MD said at the KPK’s headquarters on Thursday.
The former Constitutional Court chief admitted that he had not carried out background checks on the 250 candidates.
The KPK has not had an adviser since the resignation of its last adviser, Suwarsono, in April 2015. Suwarsono, appointed by the KPK in 2013, should have ended his term this year.
The selection committee, led by sociologist Imam Prasodjo, has been tasked with creating a new team of advisers for the antigraft body.
According to the 2002 Law on the KPK, the commission should have four advisers. Their job is to counsel the antigraft body on matters concerning its duties and authority. (dis/ary)
