epresenting Indonesia at a recent international counter-terrorism dialogue event in India, Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto called for stronger transnational cooperation in combating the growing terror threat.
Wiranto attended the 3rd Counter-Terrorism Conference in New Delhi on Tuesday, wrapping up a two-day visit to India.
"These threats are a reminder that we should continuously prepare to anticipate such extraordinary crimes," Wiranto said in his speech at the forum as quoted in a press release.
In the dialogue organized by the India Foundation and involving dozens of representatives from various countries, Wiranto said Indonesia had taken both soft and hard approaches to combating radicalism.
However, terrorism continues to prevail in the country with the world’s largest Muslim population, particularly alongside the growing influence of social media in the country.
Wiranto said extremists had skillfully exploited social media to spread their propaganda.
Indonesia ranks 38th in the latest Global Terrorism Index released by the Sydney-based Institute for Economics and Peace. The index analyzed the scale and threat of terrorism in 163 countries in 2015. As a comparison, war-torn Iraq topped the list.
“Counter-narratives are essential to preventing them [terrorists] from obtaining access [to a wider audience] through cyber technology,” Wiranto said.
In India, Wiranto also met with Vice President Hamid Ansari in a discussion where counter-terrorism issues took center stage. (ipa)
