ome 1,700 foreign workers in Bekasi, West Java, may not possess the necessary documents to work legally in the area, an official has said.
Bekasi National and Political Unity Office (Kesbangpol) head Ahmad Kosasih said on Wednesday that the authorities would check on the existence of workers who had stayed for over a year without reporting their status.
“We will check on the foreign workers who do not possess necessary documents and violate the rules as blue-collar workers, in all companies in the industrial area [of Cikarang],” Ahmad said as quoted by Antara news agency.
The office recorded 3,800 migrant workers working in the industrial area of Cikarang, of the total 5,500 migrant workers currently in Bekasi. However, to verify the data, the office will deploy a surveillance team.
Ahmad said the Bekasi administration has opened its doors wide for anyone interested in working in the industrial area, including foreign workers. However, it expected migrant workers to follow the rules. (wnd)
