ublic Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono has said the government will close a number of tollgates this year and leave fewer payment points to ease traffic congestion.

The tollgate closures include those at Soreang-Pasir Koja in West Java, Jakarta-Tangerang and Tangerang-Merak, Banten, among others.

"For Jakarta-Tangerang and Tangerang-Merak, we will close payment booths at the Karang Tengah tollgate on April 9," he said on Tuesday.

Toll road users will instead pay when they exit. Five new toll booths will be built along the toll road section, Basuki said.

The government will also integrate payment along the busy Jakarta-Bogor-Ciawi toll road by eliminating payments at the Cibubur Utama and Cimanggis Utama tollgate. The method will also be applied along the Jakarta Outer Ring Road (JORR) with JORR W1 and JORR W2.

"In principal, these measures are aimed at easing congestion. We will prioritize the toll roads in the city first," Basuki added.

Before the mass exodus in the lead up to Idul Fitri last year, the government also eliminated payments at the Cikopo tollgate last year on the Jakarta-Cikampek and Cikopo-Palimanan toll roads in West Java.

State toll road operator Jasa Marga president director Desi Arryani said the firm had introduced payment integration in Tangerang at the beginning of the year.

Basuki said toll road operators had not laid off any employees since the new policy had been applied. (bbn)
