tate-owned electricity company PLN has allocated Rp 850 billion (US$63.3 million) in capital expenditure to construct a high-voltage gas insulated substation (GISTET), aimed to meet increasing electricity demand in Jakarta and Bekasi.
PLN unit development V general manager Robert Apriyanto Purba said the GISTET, occupying 5.3 hectares of land in Rawalumbu, Bekasi, would be equipped with 500-kilovolt interbus transformers after construction finished in mid-2018.
“We are sure the GISTET will support electricity supply for people and industries in Bekasi and eastern Jakarta,” he said during a groundbreaking ceremony in Bekasi on Monday, adding that PT Siemens Indonesia had procured gas insulated switchgear (GIS) technology for the facility.
PLN Western Java area business director Murtaqi Syamsuddin said the technology would allow the company to use less space for electricity distribution amid the continuing higher peak demand for electricity.
“In the past few years, demand for electricity in Jakarta has increased 6.5 percent per year. Therefore, we are building a high-voltage distribution plant to anticipate future demand,” he said. “We decided to use GIS technology for land efficiency,” he added.
The GISTET project in Bekasi is in addition to two ongoing similar projects in Duri Kosambi and Priok, and one upcoming project in Muara Karang. The projects are expected to support electricity distribution in Greater Jakarta and avoid blackouts during peak demand. (ecn/ags)
