olkar Party chairman Setya Novanto has expressed his optimism that the gubernatorial candidate pair of Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama and Djarot Syaiful Hidayat will win the Jakarta gubernatorial runoff election on Wednesday.

Setya, who is also the House of Representatives speaker, delivered the statement after casting his vote at Polling Station 04 Melawai in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.

"Insya Allah [God willing] candidate pair Number 2 will win in the second round," Setya said, as quoted by kompas.com.

Golkar, alongside the NasDem Party and the Hanura Party, endorsed the incumbent pair of Ahok-Djarot in a coalition led by the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).

United Development Party (PPP) politicians of party factions led by Djan Faridz and Romahurmuziy have also declared support for the pair.

The Gerindra Party and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) back the incumbents’ rival pairing of Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno.

Pollsters have forecast a very tight race between the two candidate pairs.

Many observers regard the capital's election as the harbinger of things to come in the 2019 presidential election. (afr/dan)
