Jakarta LRT fare set at Rp 12,000

he fare for the Greater Jakarta’s light rail transit (LRT Jabodetabek) has been set at Rp 12,000 (90 US cents), a transportation official has said, with the assumption that the government is ready to heavily subsidize the service.
The LRT project is expected to be completed in 2019.
Head of Transportation Ministry’s railway worthiness department Jumardi said the fare had been discussed between representatives of the ministry and Maritime Coordinating Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan.

“There were three choices: Rp 10,000, Rp 12,000 and Rp 15,000. During the discussion, we agreed to decide on Rp 12,000 for the LRT fare,” said Jumardi as reported by kompas.com on Tuesday.
He added that the government would still wait for documents from state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) as an investor of the project.
The state will have to prepare a large subsidy for the project as the Cibubur-Cawang-Dukuh Atas railway, for example, would cost about Rp 40,000 per passenger.
The government is still revising the legal basis for the change in the project’s financing scheme.
Presidential Regulation No 65/2016 ruled that funds for the LRT project would come from the state budget. However, because of limited funds in the state budget, the financing scheme had to be altered.
The state can only contribute 30 percent of the original budget, while another 70 percent would come from bank loans.
The project is estimated to cost some Rp 27 trillion. (bbn)
