ish consumption is a key to improving people’s nutrition, which will eventually lead to a healthy society, an official has said.

Presidential chief of staff Teten Masduki said one out of three Indonesian people were suffering from malnourishment and this made an impact on the health of society. Improving health with nutritious but affordable food, such as fish, was fundamental to ensuring the achievement of development in the country.

Speaking during a visit to Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Teten said consuming fish routinely could increase the nutritional status of society, so people would be more ready to develop their nation. Japan and Korea were two Asian countries with high levels of fish consumption, a daily habit credited for being the key to their success in developing the capacity of their people.

“Women play an important role in determining healthy intake for society. In Indonesia, for instance, it is housewives who have usually created the consumption patterns of their families,” said Teten on Friday.

In the visit, Teten met with representatives of women communities in Oeba Beach and Lasiana district, Kupang, during which he highlighted the importance for people to make fish a part of a healthy diet of the family.

He said improving nutrition was one of main programs of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s administration, which aimed to strengthen the capacity of Indonesia’s human resources so they could compete on the global level.

It was also expected the fishing industry, especially the home-based fish product industry, could become an alternative income source for people in the country. (ebf)
