ozens of residents of Sawahan village, Boyolali regency, Central Java, blocked the entry and exit ramps of the Surakarta-Kertosono toll road in Karanganyar on Tuesday by with bamboo barricades and banners.
“There have been several talks held on compensation, but the execution is always delayed. We have sent letters three times, but the answers have never been clear. We need certainty about when compensation will be paid,” protest coordinator Anom Suratno said.
Anom said 35 people had given up their land, amounting to 2 hectares, in June for the construction of the toll road, but they had yet to be compensated.

The residents demanded the compensation be paid according to a written agreement signed on April 26, which stated it would be paid in May.
After the protest, the head of the Surakarta-Kertosono toll road freight working unit, Agung Sutarjo, met with the demonstrators to discuss the matter. “The people have sacrificed their land, but bureaucracy has hampered the compensation,” Agung said. (wit)
