eutsche Schule Jakarta (DSJ) will roll out the 14th Südostasienspiele – SOAS from May 18 to May 23 at its campus in Bumi Serpong Damai in South Tangerang, welcoming students of German Schools located in the Southeast Asian region to the event.

The 2017 games, claimed as “an expression of the continual love of students and teachers for sports,” will be attended by participants from a German-speaking school in Bangkok, Deutsche Schule Manila, German-European School Singapore, Deutsche Schule Kuala Lumpur, Deutsche Schule New Delhi and the DSJ, the organizers said in a statement.

The competing sports activities will include volleyball, track and field, swimming and soccer. In the four-day games, the participating teams will be divided into two age groups, with each team consisting of 10 boys and girls contending for points and a ranked position.

Opening and closing ceremonies, as well as a performance entitled Little Shop of Horrors by the Students Theater, are also set to entertain participants and visitors.

In 1997, the German-speaking school in Bangkok, Deutsche Schule Manila, German-European School Singapore, Deutsche Schule Kuala Lumpur and DSJ gathered for the first time at the SOAS event to determine a champion among the Southeast Asian’s German Schools.

In 2011, Deutsche Schule New Delhi became the sixth school to join the competitions. From 1997 until 2003, the competitions were held annually. After 2003, the competition was held biennially with a cultural festival, as well.

This year’s SOAS is the third event to be hosted by DSJ.
