Rome-based energy firm Eni SpA has started gas production at the Jangkrik development project site in East Kalimantan.

In a statement published on Tuesday, the oil and gas company said production from 10 deep-water sub-sea wells, connected to the newly built floating production unit (FPU) “Jangkrik”, would gradually reach 450 million standard cubic feet per day, or 83,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

The gas, once processed from within the FPU, will flow via a dedicated 79-kilometer-long pipeline to an onshore receiving facility and then through the East Kalimantan Transportation System, before finally reaching the Bontang gas liquefaction plant.

The gas from Jangkrik—located in Muara Bakau block—will supply the local domestic market as well as the liquefied natural gas export market.

The production “provides the opportunity for the Jangkrik Floating Production Unit to become a hub for the development of our nearby gas discovery Merakes [East Sepinggan block in East Kalimantan where Eni holds 85 percent stake and state-owned oil and gas firm Pertamina holds 15 percent], which could start production within the next two years,” Eni SpA CEO Claudio Descalzi said.

Eni owns 55 percent stake of the Muara Bakau production sharing contract through subsidiary Eni Muara Bakau BV.

The other partners are ENGIE E&P, through subsidiary GDF SUEZ Exploration Indonesia BV, with 33.3 percent stake and PT Saka Energi Muara Bakau with 11.6 percent stake. (tas)
