ight people have been chosen to moderate a two-day public debate held as part of the selection process of National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) commissioner candidates.

Held from May 17 to 18, the debate will give both the public and the selection team a chance to comprehensively examine the quality of the candidates.

Constitutional law expert Jimly Asshiddiqie, who heads the selection team, said a team comprising senior journalists, including The Jakarta Post’s Ati Nurbaiti, and human rights activists, such as Usman Hamid of Amnesty International Indonesia, would participate in ensuring the selection process ran transparently.

Members of the public can ask the candidates questions and openly scrutinize their records in the debate, said Jimly.

“The public debate will also provide an opportunity for the candidates to present their vision and mission if they are elected to lead Komnas HAM,” he asserted.

Sixty individuals are scheduled to participate in the public debate, which will take place at the Law and Human Rights Ministry.

The candidates will compete for seven commissioner seats of the national rights body and will determine the settlement of unresolved past rights abuse cases as well as the course of rights promotion and protection until 2022. (ebf)
