he North Jakarta administration has issued a second warning letter to squatters, instructing them to immediately leave the years-long-occupied BMW Park in Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, an official has said.
The 66.6-hectare area was planned to house a soccer stadium in 2012, when President Joko Widodo was still serving as Jakarta governor. However, its progress remains sluggish, clouded by land disputes.
North Jakarta Public Order Agency head Roni Jarpiko said “the second warning was issued last week, following the first letter issued a week earlier.” He added that the site was occupied by 257 semi-permanent buildings.
He claimed that the squatters showed no resistance when officials from his agency disseminated the warning letter and vowed to help them during the eviction.
According to the regulation, the third warning letter, which would allow the administration to carry out the eviction, would be issued within the week.
"We will communicate with the police to monitor the situation. We are also waiting for an order from the North Jakarta mayor," he said as quoted by kompas.com.
When The Jakarta Post observed the park last month, the site had transformed into a giant landfill. (fac)
