resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo distributed about 2,500 land certificates to people in Cilacap, Central Java, as part of his ambitious agrarian reform program, which is to certify a total of 126 million hectares of land in the country.
The Jokowi administration is planning to issue a total of 500,000 land certificates in Central Java this year, or 10 percent of the national target of 5 million certificates.
The 2,500 people to receive certificates came from four regencies in Central Java, namely Purbalingga, Wonosobo, Banjarnegara and Cilacap.
Jokowi said that of the total 126 million hectares of land, only 46 million hectares had been certified and his administration would step up efforts to issue certificates for the remaining 80 million in the next few years.
"In 2018, there will be a total of 7 million new land certificates, while in 2019 we will also finish another 9 million certificates," Jokowi told the audience at Cilacap Square.
Jokowi said he had asked the National Land Agency to ease the process of land certification across the country.
Cilacap is the first of five regencies and cities that the President will visit during the three-day trip.
Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranomo said that once their land was certified local people could use it as collateral to obtain bank loans to start a business.
The governor also reminded local officials in Central Java not to collect any levies from people applying for land certificates from local agencies. (ary)
