lthough most Muslims in the country kicked off Idul Fitri celebrations on Sunday, some 500 devotees at Al Marzuqiyah Mosque in Cipinang Muara, East Jakarta, started the auspicious holiday on Monday.
"Most of them are from Cipinang Muara," said the mosque's secretary Cholid Lutfi Tsani as quoted by kompas.com.
Al Marzuqiyah devotees are Muslims who follow the teachings of prominent religious figure KH Achmad Marzuki, who passed away in 1934.
In accordance with his teachings, the congregation adheres to a particular method in determining Idul Fitri through rukyatul hilal, which is done by observing the moon.
They believe that Idul Fitri falls when the altitude of the new moon reaches 7 degrees, making them celebrate the holy day at a slightly different time than most Muslims, for whom Idul Fitri falls when the new moon is at 5 degrees.
Al Marzuqiyah followers also share other religious tenets with most Muslims in the country.
Aside from Al Marzuqiyah congregation, An-Natsir Muslims in Danau Mawang South Sulawesi and Naqsabandiyah in West Sumatra also start Idul Fitri on a different day.
The latter two rang in the festivities last Saturday. (agn)
